We have visited this site on many occasions since our first in 2012 and it is where we always make for whenever we are in the area.

In the tradition of this type of site there is an EHU, a drinking water tap and a black water emptying point, a grey water emptying point and a recycling area. Food waste recycling bags are also provided.

This is a working farm and the five pitch site is situated in the corner of a field in which a crop of hay is normally grown so the owners do restrict the area used by caravans etc to a corner of the large field to minimise damage to the crop area. Within the camping area the owners will usually recommend a place to pitch, which, dependant upon the numbers of units expected will allow everyone easy access to an electricity outlet and to a nice view.

The site is quite close to Stansted Airport, indeed you can see the control tower over the fields, but the aircraft normally (although this can reverse under certain weather conditions) take-off towards the south-west (Harlow) so take-off noise does not often reach Little Henham and they land coming in on a similar heading from the north-east again without noise affecting the site.

A big plus for us is the feeling of security offered by the electrically operated gate. On arrival you are given a number that will, when keyed in, open the gate to allow vehicular access. Each camping unit gets its own unique number that will operate the gate only while that camper is officially on the site so if a past camper passes on his/her number it will no longer operate the gate.

Site access is not the easiest but that should not deter anyone as this site is well worth the effort. The route recommended by the owner takes you through the village of Elsenham, and is easy peasy till the last mile when you drive up a single track road to the farm. My caravan/car outfit is 41ft long and I have no worries, despite meeting oncoming traffic on a couple of occasions, on one of those occasions it was easier for me to back up and allow the other vehicle to pass and on the others the oncoming vehicle did the reversing honours. Since retiring in 2011 my wife and I have stayed on over 200 sites all over Europe from North Cape, Norway in the north to Sagres, Portugal in the South and this site come nowhere near the top of our difficult access list.

As well as lots of interesting places to visit there are several superb pubs in the area (including “The Cricketers” at Clavering,  owned and run by Jamie Olivers parents), for the young and active, the excellent Fleur de Lys Village Pub is a 20 minute walk through the woods away, for those of us less active a short car drive will also take you there.

Other delights to look out for are Dorringtons Multi Seed bread (nearest store Stansted Mountfitchet – a couple of miles) and Churchills Fish and Chips (a few doors down from Dorringtons). Still on food the Ugly Village Hall Farmers Market, held on the third Saturday of every month, is a very small affair with just a few stalls but there is some very good produce sold here but if you want a bigger farmers market then head for Great Garnetts Farmers Market on the second Saturday in each month
